How to apply

1. Requirements

  • A) In principle, this is a program designed for college/university students outside of Japan.
  • B) An official transcript from the applicant's home institution is required. The minimum GPA requirement for acceptance is 2.50 on a 4.00 scale or equivalent grades.
  • C) Submit an English proficiency test score.
    This does not apply to native speakers of English or the applicants enrolled in educational institutions whose main language of instruction is English. The minimum required scores are as follows: TOEFL/PBT: 550, TOEFL/iBT: 79, IELTS: 6.0

3. Tuition

173,000yen for 3 courses (Tuition fee only)

+The System Operation Fee 500 yen

153,000yen for 2 courses (Tuition fee only)

(Once the payment is made, you will not receive any refund of the excess which is caused by changing the number of courses registered or withdrawing.)
*Tuition is payable only online by credit card, PayPal or ChinaPay.
*Exemption of tuition according to the exchange partnership agreement does not apply to the applicants of this program.
*A full refund will be made if your notice of cancellation is received by the Center for Global Discovery before 5pm on December 4th, 2016 (JST).

4. How to Apply

Online Application Website "applyjapan"

(1) Visit applyjapan and fill out the online application form (applyjapan is accessible only during the application period).

(2) On Step 4, upload the following:

  • A) A photo (4cm by 3cm) should have the equal formality as the one for passport or driver license purposes, with your face straight and uncovered, and the background should be just a light-colored wall. It should not include anyone else but the applicant.
  • B) An official transcript from the applicant's home institution is required. The minimum GPA requiement for acceptance is 2.50 on a 4.00 scale or equivalent grades.
    If you are a freshman and your semester transcript is not available yet, upload the following documents (put them together into a file):

  • a) a student registration certificate from your home institution
    b) an official transcript from the previous/last school attended
  • C) Submit an English proficiency test score.
    This does not apply to native speakers of English or the applicants enrolled in educational institutions whose main language of instruction is English. The minimum scores for acceptance are as follows: TOEFL/PBT: 550, TOEFL/iBT: 79, IELTS: 6.0
  • D) A copy of your passport picture page
    The latest and current passport of the picture page must be uploaded within the application period.

5. Application Period

September 26, 2016 to November 4, 2016

6. Selection process

The applications will go through the screening by the Sophia Summer Session Committee members who evaluate the application documents submitted by the applicants.

7. Visa

Participants may need a short-term stay visa/a temporary visitor visa to attend this program, depending on the nationality. You can check the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan to see if it applies to you.

After being accepted to the program, the participants who need a visa will receive a form, "Visa Information Sheet," from our office via e-mail to fill out with your information which will be detailed on the next pages.

Visa Application

You are to provide us with the information below.

  • A) Name in alphabet
  • B) Name in Chinese Character if applicable
  • C) Nationality, date of birth, age and gender
  • D) Japanese embassy or consulate where you are planning to apply for your visa. You must apply in the city or state of your residency. For that reason, be sure to give us all the information as early as possible so that you have enough time for visa application before visiting your family in your home town. Do not try to apply for visa in your home town if you do not live there.
  • E) Name, address, and phone number of your accommodation in Japan
  • F) Mailing address we are sending your visa documents to

  • G) Your flight schedule as shown on the next page

Do not submit the Visa Information Sheet with any blanks except for B). In case you need to apply for the visa soon but your accommodaion or flight has not been determined yet, just pick the one you are most likely to book.

With the information you provide, we prepare the following documents and mail them to you by Express Mail Service. In most countries it will take 1 to 3 weeks to reach you. Note that there may be circumstances in which we refuse to provide you with the documents.

  • B) Reason for Invitation Letter - Shohei Riyusho
    (招へい理由書)
  • C) Certificate of Employment of the President of Sophia University - Gakucho no Zaishoku Shomeisho
    (学長の在職証明書)
  • D) Schedule of stay in Japan - Taizai Yoteihyo
    (滞在予定表)
  • E) Sophia University brochure
  • F) Letter of Guarantee - Mimoto Hoshosho
    (身元保証書)

Contact your local Japanese Embassy or Consulate and check if any additional items are needed for your application since requirement varies depending on the state or country of your residency. If you are required any additions, let us know on sending your "Visa Information Sheet."
