How to apply

1. Requirements

  • A) In principle, this is a program designed for college/university students outside of Japan.
  • B) The minimum GPA requirement for acceptance is 2.75 on a 4.00 scale or equivalent grades.
  • C) Participants need a certain level of English proficiency to keep up with the classes, however, there are no specific requirements to prove their English ability.
  • D) Applicants including beginners are required to take a Japanese Language Competency Test and upload the score report when applying online. See "4. How To Apply" for more information.

*Tuition is payable only online by credit card, PayPal or ChinaPay.
*Exemption of tuition according to the exchange partnership agreement does not apply to the applicants of this program.
*Applicants will receive a full refund of paid tuition by conveying the intention to cancel the attendance at the program to the Center For Global Discovery before 5pm on May 4th, 2017 (JST).

4. How to Apply:

You can apply only on the website below:
Online Application Website "applyjapan"

(1) Visit applyjapan and fill out the online application form(applyjapan is accessible only during the application period).

(2) Upload the following;

  1. ① A photo (4cm by 3cm) should have the equal formality as the one for passport or driver license purposes, with your face straight and uncovered, and your background of light colour.
  1. ② An official transcript from the applicant's home institution is required. The minimum GPA requiement for acceptance is 2.75 on a 4.00 scale or equivalent grades.
    If you are a freshman and your semester transcript is not available yet, upload the following documents (put them together into a file):
    a) a student registration certificate from your home institution
    b) an official transcript from the previous/last school attended
  2. ③ A copy of your passport picture page
    The latest and current passport of the picture page must be uploaded within the application period.

(3) J-CAT (Japanese Language Competency Test)
All Successful Applicants must take a Japanese Language Competency Test for class placement and submit the score report by e-mail. *Note that those who have never studied Japanese before need not to take the test. However, you are instructed to claim your Japanese proficiency as you have “no Japanese learning experience”.

The possible period you can take the test will be either;
① March 27 (Mon.)-April 5 (Wed.) or ②April 17 (Mon.)-April 26 (Wed.)
As your enrollment is confirmed, you will be instructed when to take the test by e-mail.

If you fail to submit the J-CAT score during the designated periods, your enrollment might be cancelled.

5. Application Period

Starts: January 16th, 2017
Ends: March 24th, 2017

Visit "Applyjapan" website by clicking here. It opens only during the application period.

6. Selection process

The applications will be screened according to all the documents submitted by applicants.

7. Visa

Applicants may need a short term visitor visa to enter Japan, depending on their nationality. Check the homepage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan to see if it applies to you.

After being accepted to the summer program, you will receive a form, "Visa Information Sheet," via e-mail to fill out with your information which will be detailed on the next pages.

Visa Application

You will be asked to provide the information below:

  1. Your name in alphabet
  2. Your name in Chinese Character if applicable
  3. Your nationality, date of birth, age and gender
  1. Japanese embassy or consulate where you apply for your visa
    Basically, you are supposed to apply for your visa in the city or state where you currently live.
  2. Name, address, and phone number of your accommodation in Japan
  3. Mailing address we send you the visa supporting documents to

7. Your flight information as shown on the next page

Fill in all the blanks of your Visa Information Sheet except for #2. If you need to apply for a visa soon but your accommodation or flight has not been determined yet, just pick the one you are most likely to book.

With the information you provided, we prepare the following documents and mail them by Express Mail Service to you which will take 1 to 3 weeks to reach you. Note that there may be circumstances in which we refuse to provide you with the documents.

  3. 3) Certificate of Employment of the President of Sophia University - Gakucho no Zaishoku Shoumeisho
    (学長の在職証明書)
  4. 4) Schedule of stay in Japan - Taizai Yoteihyo
    (滞在予定表)
  5. 5) Sophia University brochure
  6. 6) Letter of Guarantee - Mimoto Hoshosho
    (身元保証書)

Contact your local Japanese Embassy or Consulate and check if any additional items are needed for your application since requirement varies depending on the state or country of your residency. If you are required any additions, let us know on sending your "Visa Information Sheet."

8. J-CAT (a Japanese Language Competency Test)

There are two steps to follow:

  1. 1. First Step: Click on the link below and register.

    1. 1) Click on "個人受験 For Individual" button and fill in the blanks to register.
    2. 2) REMEMBER! On the registration form, type "Sophia2017" in 'Department, Section' column. Otherwise you won't be recognized as an applicant of the summer session.
    3. 3) You will receive your password by email in a few days.
  2. 2. Second Step: Log in and take the test during the designated period.
    1. 1) Click on the "Log-in Group Exam and Individual Exam" button and log in.
    2. 2) As you complete the test, your score will be displayed. Please download the score and submit it by e-mail.
    3. 3) Since you can take the test only once, start it when you have at least 90 minutes of free time. You also have a hearing section. Please prepare the earphone set if necessary.
    4. 4) Remember that there is no point trying to get a better score by cheating as this is a placement test.
